Easy To Read

What good is the information on your site if no one can read it? Don’t make your text too small or choose a font that is hard to read. Also, color scheme can help or hurt the ease of reading your pages. Be sure to choose contrasting colors when deciding on font and background colors. Visitors can easily become frustrated and exit your site if they find your page difficult to read. So keep it simple – use a white background and black text for maximum visibility.

Why Most Websites Fail & Five Easy Fixes

There are lots of reasons websites tank. Typical non-performance issues include poor layout, disastrous design, ho-hum content, missing meta data and inbound links, confusing navigation, buried info (too many clicks required to find what the browser is looking for), Las Vegas theatrics (think way too much Flash), etc.

The good news? There are LOTS of entrepreneurs who have winning websites churning serious sales, and you can too! The starting point is to understand that your website must be all about 2 things: getting found by more prospects and converting more of those inbound leads into customers. These five easy fixes will help transform your website metrics (and grow your sales)…

How to do business on the World Wide Web even when your target is the guy next door?

When I talk to many small business owners about the Internet and ways to use it to grow their business, I often encounter this response, “That’s just for people trying to sell stuff to people all over the world,” or “I tried that and it didn’t work for me.”

Whenever I hear that type of talk from small business owners, I cringe.

Let me get to the point. You must be on the Internet. You must find ways to use Internet based tools such as email to enhance your marketing efforts.

Why you need a professionally designed web site

Virtually anyone can quickly concoct a web page in an editor such as FrontPage without much knowledge of web design. However, a site that suffers from poor code, design, functionality, bad content etc. can turn search engines away. This means they may not include it in their database of web sites.

Your web site is your shop window onto the world. Just as you would never consider printing your own advertising literature because it would look home built, a web site built by an amateur will appear just that to visitors and search engines.

Remember, just because your site is on the web it doesn’t mean that people who don’t know about your services can find you. Make sure your site is ’search engine friendly’ so that it can easily be found on the web.

How to Establish an Online Presence for Your Local Business

Most local businesses like yours start with a definite target market of people within the area. As business gets better and positive word of mouth reaches farther, people from different cities and states start to make their way to your neck of the woods, just so they can try your product or service.

Now that business has started to pick up, you begin to think of actual plans for advertising and marketing. Traditional advertising—TV, radio, and print—is always an option. However, the cost to hire an agency and to produce such ads can go very high. Plus, there is no guarantee that your desired market gets to see your ad. You could end up spending too much without measurable returns.

Common passwords that hackers love

Back at the dawn of the Web, the most popular account password was “12345.”

Despite all the reports of Internet security breaches over the years, including the recent attacks on Google’s e-mail service, many people have reacted to the break-ins with a shrug.

According to a new analysis, one out of five Web users still decides to leave the digital equivalent of a key under the doormat: they choose a simple, easily guessed password like “abc123,” “iloveyou” or even “password” to protect their data. Read the rest of this entry »

How HTML 5 will change the web as we know it

One Markup Language to rule them all … and in the darkness bind them.

The Web is a living, evolving beast, and it seems certain that the future will hold more interaction with our everyday activities than it did in the past.

The mechanics for these interactions to happen are falling in place virtually every day, but a new standard is on the horizon to tie these ends together and make our lives – and the lives of browser makers – more fluid and transparent with its support.

That standard is HTML 5, the latest in a series of markup languages that rule the world wide web with a velvet glove. The first draft of HTML 5 appeared on January 22, 2008, and it has been under revision ever since.

Why Keywords Are So Important?

Anytime someone mentions the words: websites, search engines, rankings, Google, Yahoo or anything relating to the Internet – the subject of keywords always comes up. So what is a keyword and why are they so important?

First a keyword is exactly what it says. It is a word or group of words that would broadly describe an item, whether it be physical or abstract. For example if you were interested in the subject of dogs and you typed the word dogs into a search engine query. You would get approximately 160,000,000 results. Your results would list all the websites, news articles, blogs, images, videos and so on that dealt with dogs in any way shape or form. Now the more specific you are in your query – the more precise the results would be. For Instance – say you were interested in “rescued greyhound adoption services in Maryland” – that’s pretty specific and by being specific you would have cut the results down to about 140,000 or a little less than 10% of your original search. Do you think you can get even more specific? Go ahead and try and test your results.

Is a Flash Website Intro a Good Idea for a New Business?

A number of businesses have asked whether they should have a flash intro on their business website or not. Does a flash intro affect your small business website’s results positively or negatively?

A Flash Intro is not Search Engine Optimized

The first thing business owners need to realize is that a flash intro on their small business website will negatively impact on their search engine optimization. Search engine optimization requires an intro that includes the primary keywords for which the website is optimized, but the search engines are unable to read flash intros and so you are leaving out a vitally important aspect of search engine optimization if you opt for a flash intro for your business website.
